Lead Structural Engineer – Opportunity WSP is seeking a Lead Structural Engineer to support our Los Angeles, CA office. This position is open to both locations: Los Angeles, CA and Seattle, WA. Job Description Our team is a leading provider of structural design consulting services for complex building projects across multiple sectors including science/technology, healthcare, commercial construction, public safety, K‑12, and higher education. The Lead Structural Engineer will provide high‑level technical assistance and guidance for multi‑site/phase due diligence, investigation, remediation, improvement, and construction of building and infrastructure projects in the public and private sectors. Core tasks include research, design, concept development, planning, and construction of load‑bearing structures or structural elements. The role ensures compliance with project‑specific construction codes, delivers high‑quality deliverables on time, and demonstrates leadership and mentorship within the engineering team. Your Impact Apply advanced structural engineering techniques to improve building project phases from concept development to operation. Conduct research and inspections of site conditions, resources, buildings, and infrastructure to determine conformance with rules, standards, and permits. Develop construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, safety and phasing plans, and coordinate updates with owners, other disciplines, sub‑consultants, and clients. Manage design, construction, rehabilitation, and remediation of projects, ensuring durability and structural soundness. Integrate advanced technologies and modeling techniques to enhance safety and functionality for end‑users and transportation systems. Lead cross‑functional teams on multiple concurrent projects, overseeing budgets, tracking hours and expenses, technical calculations, permit applications, and compliance documentation. Coordinate, review, and approve design plans, ensuring data integrity and code compliance. Prepare data visualizations, reports, sketches, calculations, and 3D illustrations for complex analyses. Deliver technical reports and presentations that explain research, concepts, and recommendations. Analyze site investigation data and develop action plans for risk mitigation. Implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs). Collaborate with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients professionally. Engage with engineers, professionals, and authorities on federal, state, and local projects and business development opportunities. Stay current with the latest structural engineering techniques and practices. Exercise responsible, ethical decision‑making regarding company resources and conduct. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Qualifications Required Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline. 7 to 10 years of relevant post‑education experience and prior structural or civil design experience. Professional Engineer license required. Proficiency with structural engineering principles, practices, processes, and design/build application. Experience managing structural planning, design, and construction, including rehabilitation, new design, and construction projects. Knowledge of sustainability processes and reduction of hazardous substances and greenhouse gas emissions. Understanding of structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements. Strong technical computation and analysis skills involving engineering principles, plans, specifications, and regulations. Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations of building and structure design and construction. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with engineering and non‑engineering audiences. High level of self‑leadership, attention to detail, multi‑tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic work environment. Ability to work independently with minimal oversight and lead junior team members, adhering to QA/QC. Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, structural software (e.g., ETABS, RAM), BIM, and related tools. Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving skills for evaluating data, computations, statistical analysis, and economic solutions. Effective coordination and direction of subcontractors and others to complete tasks safely and efficiently. Track record of upholding workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, and harassment policies. Capacity to work irregular schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek. Occasional travel may be required. Compensation Expected Salary (all locations): $140,000–$180,000. This range is based on education, experience, skills, and geographic location.
