Dos & Don'ts On The Last Day At Work

Nothing is permanent but the change itself. There comes a time in everyone's career when one has to deal with the fact that it's the last day at their work. It could be because they might have accepted a position in search of a better career path or the company has decided to let the person go. Either way, there are some things that they should do or not do on their last day at work.

As an employee, you certainly do not want to close the future doors or burn any bridges. Therefore, it is better to depart on good terms even if you do not like your boss and especially if you believe that you have been unfairly treated for many days. That way, you can be assured that you will receive a reasonable reference letter.

What to do?

Make sure your office computer is cleaned up of any personal files. Some employers may think it is better for the company to cut off access on the day they let you go and give you a day off just to avoid any situations so you may want to back up your files before the login is disabled.

Refrain from backing up any company related data Once the date has been confirmed, find out from the HR department what the procedures are regarding your benefits, final salary and leave owing.

For contractors, it's best to submit any time sheets before you lose access. Make sure that the peers you have been working with can contact you in case they need some information or advice. Save the contact details of your peers which could be useful in future for referrals.

What not to say?

No matter how happy or how sad you are, it is best to keep your thoughts to yourself. Don't say negative things like the company may be on a downward spiral or some other things which might cause discontent to others working in your team. Also, don't gloat about your new position because you never know how befitting it might be and you may even want to come back to the company that you have left after some days of work.

Moreover, don't say anything offensive to the boss or the peers. There is no need to create an ill feeling on your last day, and most of all do not advise other people to leave because they could be quite happy with what they are doing.

If you have been asked to leave for whatever reason, don't start blaming any of your colleagues and create an ill feeling among all. On the flip side importantly, thank the company and your manager for the opportunity that was given to you to work with them.

Finally, just because it is your last day at that particular company does not mean that it will be the last time you will meet your boss or colleagues. Being polite and accepting your fate will go a long way to ensuring that if you do meet them in the future. It is better for folks to remember you as a matured professional which is required if you are seeking to have a successful career path.
