Under general supervision, the Public Health Nurse II position works as part of the Health Services Division assigned to the Childhood Immunization Team which consists of Public Health Nurses and Administrative Assistants who serve as a mobile immunization staffing unit assigned across various service delivery sites. Assigned locations include public health clinics, public schools, and community settings.

The Public Health Nurse II will serve as an immunizer and provide direct service delivery of school required immunizations to children and adolescents. Obtains and assesses immunization histories, identifies immunization needs, and develops immunization administration plans. Provides immunization-related health education and provides referrals to community resources as needed. Collaborates with team members across the agency and partner agencies as needed to improve the health of the community.

Note: This is a non-merit E-Status temporary position. Cannot exceed 1560 hours per calendar year. Appointee is eligible for limited employee benefits (including medical, vision and dental insurance coverage) and participation in flexible spending programs, but not eligible to earn leave, holiday pay or retirement benefits.

Work Schedule: May vary depending on the assignment. Must be accessible for assignments Monday through Friday and occasional evenings and weekends.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from a college or university accredited by the National League for Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education with a bachelor's degree in Nursing; plus one year post-licensure nursing experience.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Possession of a current license or a multistate licensure privilege to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Incumbent must possess a valid motor vehicle driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a Criminal Background check, a Child Protective Services Registry, a driving record check, and a Sanction Screening to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience providing immunization services to school aged children in ethnically diverse populations.
  • Proficiency in intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
  • Adheres to established infectious disease control standards and precautions.
  • Must have a high level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential information and professionalism in dealing with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities to communicate effectively and clearly with a diverse population.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative connections with internal and external partners.
  • Work well independently and on interdisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency in the use of databases and electronic applications related to the documentation and management of immunizations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Employee is required to walk, stand, sit, bend, kneel, reach, climb stairs and carry equipment or young children up to 25 pounds in weight. Uses hands to grasp, handle or feel. Visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor. Ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. Ability to drive a vehicle. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
