Note: Operational requirements for the East Chicago Public Works necessitate that persons performing the job of Helper must be available for 24-hour on-call duty.
Pay Range: In accordance with the current salary ordinance
1. Building Maintenance (30%) This dimension includes the following specific duties and responsibilities:
(1) Sweeps, vacuums, mops, and waxes building floors as appropriate,
(2) Cleans and disinfects bathrooms and showers,
(3) Cleans windows,
(4) Empties trash cans,
(5) Cleans gutters.
2. Grounds Maintenance (30%) This dimension includes the following specific duties and responsibilities:
(1) Mows and weed wacks grass,
(2) Trims shrubs and trees,
(3) Mulches around plants,
(4) Picks up trash on property,
(5) Removes snow with a blower and/or shovel
(6) Puts up and takes down holiday decorations.
3. Plant and Equipment Cleaning (10%) This dimension includes the following specific duties and responsibilities:
(1) Cleans sanitary district vehicles,
(2) Cleans clarifiers annually.
4. Basement Cleaning (5%) This dimension includes the following specific duties and responsibilities:
(1) Removes furniture and other items from flooded basements,
(2) Cleans and disinfects drained basements,
(3) Return furniture and other items to cleaned basements.
5. Preventive Maintenance (5%) This dimension includes the following specific duties and responsibilities:
(1) Checks fluid levels in equipment before use and adds more when needed,
(2) Cleans equipment after use,
(3) Performs minor repairs on equipment,
(4) Notifies Labor Foremen of equipment problems requiring additional assistance.
6. Supplies Processing (5%) This dimension includes the following specific duties and responsibilities:
(1) Unloads supply deliveries from trucks,
(2) Stores supplies appropriately,
(3) Delivers supplies to other departments,
(4) Notifies Labor Foreman of supply shortages.
7. Public Service (5%) This dimension includes the following specific duties and responsibilities:
(1) I interact with members of the public in a polite, courteous, considerate, and helpful manner,
(2) Provide answers to questions from members of the public or direct them to someone who can respond.
8. Teamwork (5%) This dimension includes the following specific duties and responsibilities:
(1) Works effectively with other members of the plant labor team,
(2) Works effectively with personnel from other departments in the Sanitary
District,
(3) Works effectively with personnel from other departments/divisions within city government,
(4) Attends and contributes to plant labor team meetings on workplace issues and problem-solving,
(5) Supports decisions made by the plant labor team,
(6) Goes out of the way to help other team members,
(7) Listens to other team members ideas and suggestions.
9. Safety (5%) This dimension includes the following specific duties and responsibilities:
(1) Performs all job tasks in a safe manner,
(2) Complies with all department and division safety policies, rules, and regulations,
(3) Identifies and corrects/reports safety hazards when they occur.
10. Other duties as assigned.*
